As operators around the world start to switch off their 2G/3G networks in favour of their 4G/5G networks in order to
provide customers with faster data speeds and improved quality of service, this may change how you access Voice,
SMS and Data Roaming services outside of Ireland.
What does this mean for you as a customer?
If you have a 2G/3G handset/plan and roam in a country that has switched off its 2G/3G networks, this may impact
your voice, SMS and data services (slower services or in some cases, no/limited services). As time progresses, this will
impact more and more destinations. As a result, we recommend that you check your handset/plan in advance of travel
and either: (i) upgrade to a 4G/5G handset/plan; and/or (ii) be aware of alternative means of communication while
roaming, if necessary.
If you have a 4G/5G handset/plan and encounter any issues (while operators move from 2G/3G to 4G/5G), we also
recommend that you are aware of alternative means of communication while roaming.
How do I check my handset/plan? What handsets/plans are 4G/5G compatible?
You can check your handset by going into your mobile handset’s ‘Network Settings’ and then ‘Mobile Connections’.
This should indicate whether your handset is 4G/5G compatible. All of our available 4G/5G compatible handsets are
clearly indicated on our website: www.tescomobile.ie. From 2nd October 2024, all of our active plans are 4G/5G
enabled. If you have any questions or would like to discuss, please contact us on 1903.
What alternative means of communication are there?
If you do not have voice/text roaming services, you can use your data roaming service to contact other users of online
messaging services e.g. Whatsapp. If you need to contact emergency services, you should use fixed line services. If
you do not have a data roaming service, you can also use WiFi.
